Veterans who suffer from PTSD will choose (the horse will also choose) an untouched wild mustang to connect with. Horses are natural empaths, they are able to sense our emotions, feelings and thoughts, you can't lie to a horse. The horse will mirror back your true emotions to you, thus showing you your inner turmoil. By being honest with the horse we are honest with ourselves and can learn how to work through our emotions. The veteran and the horse will be able to connect on a soulful level. Through silence and through breathing techniques that lower the heart rate and respirations, thus lowering anxiety, the mustang will also lower his anxiety level. Speaking to the horse from the heart will begin to form a bond of mutual trust and understanding.
Vietnam Veteran and Purple Heart recipient, Ray Ogas comes out to Wild Horse Haven to bond with Sidewinder. Ray does Horse Heart Breathing with Sidewinder and he says that it makes him feel calm.
Wild Horse Haven is now open at any time to veterans and their families. They can walk the trail and sit and watch the mustangs grazing. Continuing along the trail they can walk the Medicine Wheel and contemplate life. Then they can walk over to the other pasture and connect with the horses as they come up to say hi.
Local Vietnam veteran enjoyed sitting at our new bench at the mustang viewing area. He told me that he could sit there all day and watch the mustangs. Informative signs tell the history of the American Mustang.
